DNA UPDATE

Welcome to all Group 8 members who are just discovering this blog.

After taking a long break from writing this blog, I felt I needed to prominently update the Williams Group 8 DNA information.

We have grown!

When my Dad took the Y DNA test in 2006, there were less than 10 members in Group 8. As of today, February 22, 2020 there are now more members than I can count. It's great to have so many cousins in our group.

Several of the participants in Group 8 have traced their Williams lines back to Wales. So we are all hoping to achieve that goal with our Williams lines.

If you have doubts about DNA testing, please think of the heritage you would be leaving your family. Although my Dad died in 2009, I feel that he is still helping me with my research since his DNA is getting so many matches. It's a true legacy for a genealogist.

Our group uses Family Tree DNA, the oldest, very well respected testing lab. They don't do just one test, but offer many different tests. They frequently put their tests on "sale", which is great for the budget. If you are interested in checking them out, their web site is full of helpful information. The link is: https://www.familytreedna.com/

If you think you might be connected to any of the families in this blog, please don't hesitate to contact the person who has contributed the information. Their email addresses are located at the end of each post. Mine is williams.seeker@gmail.com.

Good luck to all of my Williams cousins who are researching your trees!

Ancestors of William (Billy) Williams of Tennessee

Katala Williams and daughter Anitra Williams Fay's family is from Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, which makes it very interesting, since we also have the families of Thomas Williams, Benjamin Williams and Richmond Williams living in other areas of Tennessee. So far, we have been unable to find the missing link(s) to connect these Tennessee families, even though DNA shows them to be closely related.

Williams - Godwin

A mystery in Georgia was discovered by Bob Godwin when he took his DNA test. Expecting to connect with his Godwin cousins, he learned that he was - in fact - a Williams Group 8 match. Bob has researched this connection back to the 1800s in Brooks County, Georgia.

His results are:

Robert E. Williams - born Apr 1856 in Florida (or Georgia - the census for 1880 states this) -- died 1931 in Brooks County, Georgia

Married Nancy Unknown and seemingly had no children.

In the 1880 census Robert's mother is living with him. She states that her name is Martha Timmons (or Timmer) age 47.

It is interesting to find in the 1910 Brooks County Census for Morven that the Williamses live next to the Godwin family and two Dailey families with Brunswick County, Virginia connections.

Bob is working on his Williams connection and would appreciate any help in getting this line further back.

.

I receive many emails from Williams researchers each month. After reading this blog, they write me, hoping I can help them connect to their Williams ancestors. It is always a pleasure to hear from other Williamses. Unfortunately, I don't have answers to everyone's questions about their ancestors -- I wish I did!

Recently, in August, I received an exciting email from someone who wanted to help our DNA blog identify the family members in the photo of Isaac J. Williams and family. This very nice man, Larry, happens to be a distant cousin to me and to Ken and Rebecca, two other DNA Group 8 members. Larry is also a cousin to JoAnn and Jessi who are not members of the DNA group but are related to our William Williams from Brunswick County, Virginia.

Larry sent the following names to identify the Isaac J. Williams family of Muncie, Indiana which is located at the bottom of this page:

Front Row from Left to Right:
* Adda B. Williams (daughter) - born 16 July 1875
* Emiline Jones Williams (Mother) - born 15 Oct. 1845
* Isaac J. Williams (Father) - born 30 Dec. 1840
* Jennie Williams (daughter) - born 31 July 1868

Back Row from Left to Right:
* Marion Williams (son) - born 9 Sept. 1866
* Burten Williams (son) - born 27 Sept. 1872
* John W. Williams (son) - born 12 Feb. 1878

I would like to encourage Larry and anyone else who is related to this Williams line to please try DNA testing. We would like to have more evidence to prove the lineage of William Williams and his descendants. In order to prove the past, we need to look to DNA testing -- we know it doesn't lie!

Thanks so much for your help, Larry. It is so nice to find a new cousin.

As a result of this email, I would like to encourage other Group 8 members who need help identifying family photos to send them to me. We can post them on this blog and see if we can solve other mysteries.
