Stephen Williams I was in the Revolutionary War; he received a pension (file number 9897). He stated in his pension application that he enlisted in the Army in 1782 with Joseph T. Rhodes and served in the 10th Regiment of the North Carolina Line. At that time he was living in Duplin County, N. C. He also stated that he was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, that he did not know exactly what year he had been born, but was certain he was upwards of 70 years old. His wife, Polly, applied for a pension after Stephen's death. At the date of her application, 3 Feb. 1860, she stated that she was aged 71.

I am not a Williams descendant but have come across the Williams family while researching my family in Duplin Co., NC. Stephen Williams d. 1843 Brunswick, NC is said to have been upwards of 70 years old as of 1833 per Revolutionary War Pension Statement which puts his birthdate at around 1763 and is stated to have lived prior in Duplin and Onslow Counties. This sounds a lot like it could be the Stephen Williams of Duplin that was gifted land from his father, Richard Williams d. 1791 Duplin, in 1776. Assuming he was 18 at the time, that would be a birthdate of 1758. Stephen had brothers Jeremiah Williams and Jacob Williams which were also gifted land from their father. A 1795 deed of Jacob Williams notes Joseph T. Rhodes’ line; the pension record states Stephen served under Lt. Joseph T. Rhodes in 1782.
